This was a radio that Northern Electric called "The Biggest Little Radio in the World". Manufactured in Montreal, Canada in 1946, the Model 5000 was the first Northern Electric radio to be marketed as a "Baby Champ". It was housed in a distinctive "waterfall" or "rainbow" bakelite cabinet. This same cabinet was subsequently used in several more Northern Electric radio models and even an intercom system. Some models were manufactured for other companies for sale outside of Canada and marketed under a number of labels including "Westrex", "Aeroquipment", and "Airotone". The focus of this website will be on those models that used the waterfall cabinet. I've collected these radios for the past ten years, and have always been fascinated by the variations I've observed even among examples of the same model. From time to time, I plan to add information I've accumulated model by model along with a few examples from my collection. Eventually I hope to add a section with examples of Northern Electric Baby Champ advertising along with a section on how to reproduce radio knobs. Please check back occasionally... |
